Christoph Caskel

Christoph Caskel was born in Greifswald in 1932 and died in Cologne in 2023. The concert percussionist played the first performances of Karlheinz Stockhausen’s “Zyklus” (1959) and “Kontakte” (1960) and of Mauricio Kagel’s “Exotica” (1972) and was percussionist of the Cappella Coloniensis. In 1963 he received the Förderpreis des Landes Nordrhein-Westfalen für Musik; from 1975 he taught as professor of timpani and percussion at the Hochschule für Musik Köln. He also taught at the Darmstädter Ferienkurse and at the Rheinische Musikschule Köln. Alongside his concert activity, Caskel developed with “Snare Drum … step by step …” a percussion tutor. His estate is held in the Paul Sacher Stiftung in Basel. He plays percussion on the Cybele albums Portrait Günther Becker (1998) and Günther Becker: Collected Works – Electroacoustic Music (2004).
