Christoph Caskel was born in Greifswald in 1932 and died in Cologne in 2023. The German concert percussionist became internationally known in the early 1960s through performances of solo and chamber works of new music, among them Karlheinz Stockhausen’s “Zyklus”. In 1963 he received the North Rhine-Westphalia state award for music; from 1975 he was professor of timpani and percussion at the Hochschule für Musik Köln, where he shaped a great many younger musicians. Alongside his concert career, Caskel developed with “Snare Drum … step by step …” a percussion tutor that permanently documents his teaching.
