Gustav Holst

Composer

Born in Cheltenham on 21 September 1874, died in London on 25 May 1934; Gustav Holst was a composer. At the Royal College of Music he studied composition with Charles Villiers Stanford and at first earned his living as a trombonist in orchestras. From 1905 he taught at St Paul’s Girls’ School in London and from 1907 at Morley College; he kept both posts to the end. His music combines the English folk song tradition, English Renaissance vocal writing and an interest in Indian literature and astrology. His works include the orchestral suite The Planets (1914-1917), the Hymns from the Rig Veda, the St Paul’s Suite, the choral works and the orchestral pieces Egdon Heath and Beni Mora. In the Cybele catalogue his music is heard in an arrangement: Jörg Endebrock, Susanne Rohn and Konrad Graf recorded it for Arrangements for 2 Organs and Percussion (Vol. 2, 2019).
