Born in Buenos Aires in 1960; Javier Alejandro Garavaglia is an Italian-Argentinian composer, viola player and sound artist. From 1980 to 1986 he studied composition at the Facultad de Artes y Ciencias Musicales of the Universidad Catolica Argentina in Buenos Aires; his teacher in viola was Tomas Alejandro Tichauer. Since 1990 he has lived and worked in Essen, where he studied composition with Nicolaus A. Huber until 1992 and electronic composition with Dirk Reith until 1995. For his compositions he received the Folkwang-Preis in 1995 and the TRIMARG-Preis in 1997, among others. From 1997 he taught at the Institut für Computermusik und elektronische Medien of the Folkwang-Hochschule, from 1999 he was Associate Director of the Florida Electroacoustic Music Festival of the University of Florida; later he taught at London Metropolitan University and at Bath Spa University, most recently as professor of music technology. His research is devoted to spatial sound design, the real-time programming of digital signal processing and biofeedback interfaces. His music has been broadcast by BBC Radio 3, WDR and HR2, among others. Three albums connect him with Cybele, all in the field of electroacoustic composition. Two belong to the ex machina series — tangent (1996) and The Nineties (2001) — and one to the DEGEM series: kontinuum … bruchlos (2003). On all three he stands alongside composers from the Essen circle, among them Dirk Reith and Friedhelm H. Hartmann.
