He graduated from the Oberlin Conservatory with a bachelor’s degree and earned his master’s degree at the University of Illinois; further studies took him to the Center for Contemporary Music at Mills College, the University of Sussex and the Musikhochschule Köln. As a percussionist he played in several American symphony orchestras and new music ensembles. From 1980 to 2000 he studied, composed and performed in Europe, and during this time he also worked as an assistant to Karlheinz Stockhausen. His publications include “Stockhausen in Den Haag” and an introduction to the superformula of Stockhausen’s “Donnerstag aus Licht”. His compositions were performed in North America and Europe and broadcast on radio; at the time of the recording he lived as a freelance composer in Bergisch Gladbach near Cologne. On the Cybele album Feedback Studio Köln Sampler – 25 Years of Feedback Studio Köln Studio (1996) he is represented with an excerpt from “Music for Cello and Electronic Sounds” (1991), a concert recording from 1991 with the cellist Stephen Harrison; for Clarence Barlow’s “Pandora” on the same album he was responsible for the sampler realisation.
