Founded in 1897 by the Verein der Musikfreunde Lübeck; eleven years later the Philharmonisches Orchester der Hansestadt Lübeck took on, alongside the symphony concerts, the opera duties in the Lübeck theatre building opened in 1908, and to this day it is the orchestra of the Theater Lübeck. Its history was shaped by conductors such as Hermann Scherchen, Hermann Abendroth (1905–1911), Wilhelm Furtwängler (1911–1915), Eugen Jochum (1928/29), Christoph von Dohnanyi (1957–1963) and Gerd Albrecht (1963–1966). From 2001 to 2013 Roman Brogli-Sacher was general music director; he was succeeded in the 2013/14 season by Ryusuke Numajiri and later by Stefan Vladar. Besides music theatre the orchestra gives nine symphony concerts and four children’s concerts each season. On Cybele Records it can be heard on Arnold Schönberg: Die Prinzessin (2008) and on Schönberg. Monn. Cello Concertos (2013, conducted by Roman Brogli-Sacher).
