Born in Offenbach am Main in 1968; Stefan Thomas is a composer. From 1982 to 1990 he was a pupil at Dr. Hoch’s Konservatorium in Frankfurt am Main, in composition with Gerhard Schedl and in piano with Theodora Lungu. From 1990 he studied at the Musikhochschule Köln, composition with Krzysztof Meyer, piano with Pi-hsien Chen and Peter Degenhardt and music theory with Roland Löbner and Friedrich Jaecker; from 1992 to 1995 he attended Tristan Keuris’s composition master class at the Hogeschool voor de Kunsten in Utrecht and in 1995 passed his final examination in composition with distinction. From 1996 he taught music theory at the Musikhochschule Köln. In 1995 he won first prize at the Junge Komponisten competition in Leipzig, in 1997 first prize at the Joseph Haydn Competition in Eisenstadt, and in 1999/2000 he held a scholarship from the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung. For the international recorder competition in Calw he wrote “Drei Bagatellen” for tenor recorder. On the Cybele album without compression (1998) he is represented with “Veränderungen” (1993), which starts out from the sound of the bass recorder as a soft organ stop; the Trio Diritto, to whom the piece is dedicated, had premiered it in Celle on 17 October 1993.
