Vol. 17 of the Max Reger Edition belongs to the performer’s voice. In the Sophie Charlotte Hall of Berlin Cathedral, Mirjam Wiesemann speaks with Martin Schmeding about the creation of his complete recording of Reger’s organ works. The conversation looks back over more than two years, during which Schmeding sought out historic instruments and their church interiors for the project.
Schmeding explains why the choice of organs is essential for this repertoire. He discusses the musical and logistical challenges of the recordings, stations on his journey, and Max Reger as composer and person. The encounter makes the decisions behind the edition’s sixteen musical instalments comprehensible.
This SACD contains a conversation rather than another organ recording. The 3D binaural version is intended for headphones and complements the stereo version with the spatial situation of the encounter.
