Antonio Lucio Vivaldi

Composer

Born in Venice on 4 March 1678, died in Vienna on 28 July 1741; Antonio Lucio Vivaldi was an Italian composer, violinist and priest. He had his first violin lessons from his father, a violinist at San Marco; in 1703 he was ordained priest and in the same year entered the service of the Ospedale della Pieta in Venice as a violin teacher, an institution with which he remained connected, with interruptions, until 1740. He wrote a large part of his instrumental music for the girls’ orchestra of the house. His output comprises several hundred concertos, among them the four violin concertos of the Quattro stagioni from the cycle Il cimento dell’armonia e dell’inventione, sonatas, sacred works such as the Gloria and operas. In the Cybele catalogue his chamber music is heard on Dreyer. Détry. Vivaldi: Sonatas for Solo Instruments and b.c. (2019) with Renata Duarte, Aline Zylberajch, Annabelle Luis and Ricardo Rapoport.
