Claudio Veress

Philosophy teacher / Contemporary witness

Born on 29 September 1956; Claudio Veress is the son of the composer Sandor Veress and the pianist Ilse von Alpenheim. He grew up in Bern and studied philosophy, modern German literature and German philology there. From 1988 he taught philosophy at the Gymnasium Lerbermatt, a cantonal grammar school in Bern-Köniz. As a passionate violinist and violist he took part in recordings of works by his father, mainly chamber music, for Swiss Radio DRS, Magyar Radio Budapest and the Hungaroton label. From 1992 he accompanied the scholarly and editorial processing of his father’s estate in close cooperation with the Paul Sacher Stiftung in Basel. On the album Sandor Veress and the Hungarian Folk Song (2017) he talks in conversation with Mirjam Wiesemann (2016) about his childhood and youth, his relationship with his father and his father’s path into exile.
