Elisabeth Reußmann was born on 18 February 1913 and died on 2 August 2003. She met Karl Amadeus Hartmann in the circle of the Munich artists’ association „Die Juryfreien“; the couple married in 1934. After the composer’s death she preserved and cared for his estate and carried on the openness towards artists and figures of international cultural life that the two of them had cultivated. Until her death she remained close to Hans Werner Henze and was an important witness to the life and circle of Karl Amadeus Hartmann; a conversation with Ulrich Dibelius in 1994 documents her personal memories of post-war Munich.
