Founded in 1978 under the direction of its concertmaster Wolfgang Gurland by musicians linked to one another through chamber music; the Orchester der Kölner Kammermusiker transfers the working method of chamber music to orchestral scoring, plays in changing, historically informed scoring and, for some years now, also on a symphonic scale. The repertoire ranges from vocal and instrumental music of the baroque, the classical period and early romanticism to contemporary compositions; the oratorio projects include Pietro Mascagni’s “Messa di Gloria” with Nicolai Gedda and Leonard Bernstein’s “Mass” at the Hessischer Rundfunk. For Cybele Records the orchestra, under the direction of Steffen Schreyer, took part in the first recording of Michael Denhoff’s “In unum Deum – Credo for soprano, baritone, choir, organ and small orchestra op. 93”, together with Irene Kurka (soprano), Alban Lenzen (baritone) and the Chor der Katholischen Hochschule für Kirchenmusik St. Gregorius Aachen; the recording appeared in 2004 on the album Michael Denhoff: Credo.
