Born 1833 in Hamburg, died 1897 in Vienna; Johannes Brahms was a German composer, pianist and conductor of the High Romantic period. His meeting with Robert and Clara Schumann in 1853 became a decisive impulse for his early career; later he found his artistic centre in Vienna. With four symphonies, concertos, “Ein deutsches Requiem”, an extensive body of chamber music, piano works and songs, Brahms created an œuvre of exceptional formal coherence and emotional depth. As performer and composer he was internationally recognised in his own lifetime.
